Reluctantly I agree, that one of the reasons the story originally stopped. Emma was always going to be a big part of the story and be an emotional hook but "Tom" as the audiences point of view had to be less experienced and new to the situation. But his interactions fell apart and became to reactionary.
I changed his name in this one to force myself to think of him as a new person and not just a "yes and man" allowing things to escalate to unrealistic levels.
