Well as far as i am aware, the common grammar rules dictate, so as to avoid accent-based disputes, that the word "An" is only to replace "A" when preceeding a word with a beginning letter that is either a vowel, or, despite being often overlooked, "h".

Ergo:

An example,
A fruitful experience,
and An harrowing result.
