Spelling for Morons

Look, I know spelling is the not the easiest thing in the world for a lot of people. Especially since there are people who live all across the world on getdare, and spelling may have different dialects or simple changes in a single word (favorite and favourite for example), spelling can be very tricky. As a mod on getDare who struggles with spelling at times, I am not going to get mad at someone who misspells one word on accident. However, what I will get mad at are people who use AOL speak or don't take time at all to a spellchecker. Now, for morons, you may be asking what the following two are and how can I avoid getting an infraction for doing them. Thank God I am here.

First AOL speak. Here is an example:

First, this is a stupid sentence to begin with, and something an idiot would say. Second, this qualifies as AOL speak since this user cannot spell the simple words of you, want and be. This is avoidable by spelling out such words.

The second one you may get mad at me for, and really, I don't give a flying f***. Using a spellchecker is one of the easiest things to do in the world. If you know you suck at spelling, it is right there for you. One way to to spell-check your post is to type it out in something like Microsoft Word and copy and paste it onto getDare. I know that not everyone has Word, that is why I have alternates. The latest versions of the web browsers such as Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome have such options, on Windows 7 at least (if you use Firefox or Chrome, right click to make sure the spellchecker is enabled. Also I cannot speak for any other kind of OS). Note that if you use Internet Explorer, this option does not exist. There are a few ways to correct this. The first is to get a real web browser. The second is to go to a website such as http://www.spellcheck.net/speller/ where it will do it for you.

Are some of these tips inconvenient for some? Probably. Like I said, if you misspell a word or two in a story, odds are no mods will really care to the point where they will give you an infraction. However, if you really have trouble spelling, hopefully, you can learn something from this post.

Until next time,

Manbearpig

PS: I welcome feedback so feel free to post. If you noticed anything wrong with any of my statements or have a different OS, feel free to share what you are thinking and I will copy it to the main post!

Haha, the title certainly isn't very subtle, but i am happy to see a topic like this on the less. It always irks me when people seem to typing in such a manner on purpose.

In regards to spell checking on Firefox, they have their own system and dictionaries for it, so it works regardless of the OS it is used on :)

Dear MBP:
i lUv u. can i b Ur spellcheck Slav?!?!?!!!!111
In all seriousness, thanks for this. I know I may have the occasional typo...But it does get tiring reading chat speak and incredibly illiterate sentences.

I don't mean to cause an argument, however there is one major flaw in your' insistence that everyone use a spell check. Most spell checkers that I know of can't spell correct English. They try to change correct spellings of everyday words into some corrupted version of English, most commonly known as American English.

Besides which, the word Slav (that you were so passionate about) is the correct word to describe a person of Slavic origin. Therefore, running this mis-spelling of the word slave through a spell check, would not result in it being picked up.

Yaeh I get aenyond at smoe of the bad selpinlg on hree too. I'm not the bset selplr mslyef you konw. Idk wat ur talkn bout wif ta alo spek tho?

Thank you for pointing this out. I get mad at times when people use text talk. People pm me say: Hey do u waaaant to B my slav or mastr plz repli liek soon cuz i need 2 go sumwhere.

Thats a copy and paste of a pm I actually got! People make so many silly mistakes that can easily be changed.

Thanks xxx

If you want to go such a route, American English would be the preferred standard to use from a practical standpoint. This is mostly due to the fact that there are many more users of it on the web than those who use UK English, which is what i assume you are referring to. This is true not only among those who have it as their native language, but also for those among us who primarily learned English through the web and media such as movies and games.

And to claim that one type of "standardized" English is more "correct" that another is just silly and ignores that languages can change (would old English or middle English not be more correct English than modern English by such logic after all?)

First off, American English is not corrupted. It is a type of English (just as Ebonics is). Deal with it. Secondly, I was not passionate about the word slav, it was mainly the other words I cared about. And if you do not capitalize slav, in Firefox at least it shows up as incorrect since you are misusing the word. Also, it should be known to someone who is 18 years of age that they should be able to spell the word slave.

Manbearpig 03-28-2011 09:08 AM

Also, it says on the Slave/Master section that it is the Slave/Master section. When creating a thread, it asks if you want a slave or a master and asks if you are a slave or a master. When replying to someones post it says a slave is looking for a master or vice-versa. Therefore, the misspelling of the word slave is really not inexcusable, but thank you for the Geography lesson (I already knew that by the way.)

However, the point of this thread is not to discuss the word slave or the Slav's so if you have any information, please feel free to post it.

moxie 03-28-2011 10:51 AM

I think this begs the question, does anyone have a Slavic slave?

In all seriousness, thank you for the thread. It is much more enjoyable to read posts with solid spelling and decent grammer.

Spelling is my life, therefore this thread makes me very happy :D

This is only applicable if using a PC / LAPTOP as ipod touch / phones etc dont have spell checker that i am aware of, or if they do sure will be harder to use

ps - not meaning to pick spots on this excellent thread just showing that even spell checks etc can miss things

MY PERSONAL VIEW

I agree with MOST of your thread and that fact that AOL speak is not required, and as I’m dyslexic I DO use Microsoft word for spelling before posting parts to my story.

However I don’t find this practical in some circumstances, in chat extra.
The problem I also find is being dyslexic I get words muddled up occasionally eg)

There / their
Were / wear / where
Through / though / throw
Are just example – and Microsoft word therefore is unable to pick these up

I also find sometimes that Microsoft word / spell checkers etc are unable to find the word I am looking for eg)

To represent as greater than is actually the case; overstate = Exaggerate

This word took me 8min 12 sec to find spelling as at first put edzadurate / egsadurate / exadurate etc all with no spelling corrections being correct.
I found the correct spelling in the end my typing how I expected it to be worded in INTERNET EXPLORER – and it came up with suggestions unlike Microsoft word

The other thing I disagree with on this thread is the fact that you can easily when checking what you have typed miss something, you may type the word twice, or missed a word out etc

Also at times I am only on IPOD TOUCH and so CAN NOT use a spell checker before posting, however when doing this I do not post new threads – or parts of story for this reason. You can usually tell when I have typed on ipod touch as at bottom of posts it usually states Love RACHIE (capitals) and lower case if using Laptop.

However for the majority I agree that everyone CAN TRY to use proper English and spell things to the best of their capabilities

Love Rachie
